"Q-Day" and the Right to Privacy: Crypto-Agility as a Social Security Mandate
Quantum computing promises to solve complex problems in minutes, but it also brings with it "Q-Day": the moment when current algorithms like RSA will be vulnerable to Shor's Algorithm. There is a silent threat called "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later," where sensitive data of citizens, journalists, and vulnerable groups is being stored today to be exposed tomorrow. This is not just a technical problem; it is a direct threat to legal certainty and social rights.
In my Cyberdefense training at UNDEF, I have identified that the lack of coordinated governance in Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) leaves our institutions vulnerable to blackmail and mass espionage. Disinformation and digital violence already operate today to silence women and indigenous peoples; if we add the quantum capacity to break the privacy of their communications, the social damage will be irreversible. My proposal is based on crypto-agility: the ability of our national systems to automatically migrate to secure standards.
Through projects like StreamGate-Core, I seek to integrate this resilience into the geospatial data pipelines that manage critical infrastructure. The digital sovereignty of Argentina and Latin America depends on us moving beyond seeing quantum security as an academic concept and adopting it as a mandate for social justice. Protecting state secrets and personal data today is the only way to guarantee a stable democracy in tomorrow's global digital ecosystem.
