Data Governance in the Face of Orbital Infrastructure
He recent alliance between SpaceX and xAI to build data centers in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) marks the beginning of an era where critical infrastructure no longer resides under a clear national jurisdiction. By moving computing power outside the atmosphere to overcome thermal and energy limits, we face a legal vacuum: who protects citizens' rights when their data is processed in international orbit?. As an architect of sovereign geospatial systems, I maintain that technology must be an infrastructure at the service of human beings and not the other way around.
The governance of these orbital clusters cannot be exclusively corporate. If the data powering AI models like Grok is processed beyond the reach of terrestrial laws, we risk eroding national technological sovereignty. My vision focuses on the need for "offline rights applicable online," extending this premise to space. It is not enough to have rad-hardened hardware to resist cosmic radiation; we need software protocols that guarantee electoral integrity and freedom of expression, preventing disinformation from becoming a technology of "social discipline" from the stars.
In my experience automating pipelines for the SAOCOM system, I learned that data control is the foundation of national security. Therefore, I propose that the response to orbital AI should be the creation of strategic bridges between the aerospace sector and human rights frameworks. We must ensure that edge computing in space does not become a haven for algorithmic opacity, but rather a tool for resilience and social equity for the entire region
